Active Directory
Active Directory (AD) is a technology created by Microsoft to provide network services including LDAP directory services, Kerberos based authentication, DNS naming, secure access to resources, etc. Active Directory uses a single database which a variety of services and applications can use to access and store a variety of information. Active Directory is used by system administrators to store information about users, assign security policies, deploy software and offer remote assistance.

The Knox County Schools Active Directory team is responsible for the design, implementation and day-to-day management of the Knox County Schools Active Directory Domain, Server Applications and Operating Systems, Server Hardware and other related Network Software and utilities. Standardized on Windows Server 2008, Active Directory Domain Services provides the means to link user identities, computer accounts, networks and many other aspects of the IT infrastructure. The Knox County Schools Active Directory team has embraced green initiatives by utilizing Hyper-V to virtualize dozens of servers on just a few physical machines, thereby reducing overall carbon footprint, cost, and management overhead.

If there are any major announcements they will be available under the announcements sections as well.

New Password Rules and Requirements
When you reset your Active Directory password, these new rules and restrictions must be followed. If you do not follow these guide lines, you will not be able to log in to Knox County Schools computers or the new email system. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESET YOUR ACTIVE DIRECTORY PASSWORD AT THIS TIME.

New password rules:
• The password is case-sensitive.
• The password can contain uppercase letters and lowercase letters.
• The password can contain numbers.
• The password can contain the following symbols: ` ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + - = { } | [ ] \ : " ; ' < > ? , . /
• The minimum password length is 6 characters.
• The maximum password length is 16 characters.

New password restrictions:
The password can’t contain any of the following items:
• Spaces.
• Non-English characters.
• Any part of the account name that is attached to the email address.

Default Password Change for All users
User accounts passwords will now be created differently in Active Directory. This information will only apply to users that are created in Active Directory as of January 1, 2011. The new default password, for all users, is the first letter of the user’s first name CAPITALIZED, the first letter of the user’s last name CAPITALIZED, and the last FOUR digits of the user’s employee OR student ID. An example of a staff member would be JOHN DOE (000012345), who’s password will now be JD2345. An example of a student would be JOHN DOE (S123456), who’s password will now be JD3456. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT WE HAVE CHANGED THE PASSWORDS BACK TO DEFAULT. THIS CHANGE ONLY APPLIES TO THE DEFAULT PASSWORD THAT IS CREATED WHEN THE ACCOUNT IS CREATED, BEFORE THE USER RESETS THEIR PASSWORD.

Users that were created before January 1, 2011 will have the same default password as before. An example of a staff member would be JOHN DOE (000012345), who’s password is JD45. An example of a student would be JOHN DOE (S123456), who’s password will now be JD56. AGAIN, THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT WE HAVE CHANGED THE PASSWORDS BACK TO DEFAULT. THIS CHANGE ONLY APPLIES TO THE DEFAULT PASSWORD THAT IS CREATED WHEN THE ACCOUNT IS CREATED, BEFORE THE USER RESETS THEIR PASSWORD.

Adobe Reader X and Star Student / Gradebook
After updates were installed over the first weekend of December, a few individuals have reported issues viewing documents in Gradebook and Star Student. If you are having issues, please ask your BLTC to repair Adobe Reader X. The installation package can be found here. After repairing or installing Adobe Reader X, please launch the application and agree to the "Terms of Usage". This issue is a result of Browser Add-ons failing to uninstall or install. Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation.
Adobe and Java Updates
The Active Directory Team will be deploying updates for Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Shockwave Player and Java this weekend. These updates will be installed by a software installation policy on all Windows computers that have been added to Active Directory. If you are in a school where Active Directory has been deployed, please instruct teachers and other staff members to leave all Windows computers turned on this Friday (12-3-10). These updates will be deployed starting Friday evening through Sunday evening. This time frame should allow all updates to be installed without classroom and business day interruption. Thank you for your cooperation.
Active Directory Deployments
We have resumed migrating schools to Active Directory. A complete list of schools that have already been migrated and a tentative schedule for the upcoming migrations can be found below in the "Department Files".
